Club Collars Aren’t Generic Man | Watch Me Dress

Justin Bridges - 51

Club collars aren’t the easy thing to pull off, and when you add the contrast “banker’s collar”….well, it can be easy as hell to crap out on the dice roll.  I’m always up front with you all, and to be frank, I was pretty uncomfortable for the first hour or two I wore this outfit.  I had to settle in you know.  But once I got used to the idea of the club and the color blocked tie; and after I took some harassment from some fairly conservatively classic dressers, my internal harmony was reached.

These pics were taken at a shoe launch for Pencey.  I don’t endorse drinking by having a cup in my hand, but I will say that a little bit of spirit can be a pleasant way to bring in the evening air.  Only a couple comments for this outfit today.  I’ll start by saying club collars are cool when you pair them with the appropriate proportion with regards to neckwear.  Club collars also look amazing without the tie.  I went with a colorful pocket square to share the color blocking glory of the tie.  I just think that when you go with a pretty neutral palette, it doesn’t hurt to throw in some eye-directing pop to let people know you aren’t afraid to shake it up.  The belt is skinny.  I can’t wait until they stop making big buckles, and 2-inch wide leather belts…doesn’t put a smile on my face at all.

A quick comment on black shoes…I absolutely hate them.  I have a few exceptions, alternative fabrications to leather are a thumbs up for me.  I think the better options for black shoes are a canvas oxford (above) or a velvet slipper.  I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, “Black leather shoes often look ridiculously cheap or tired, even plastic-ky.”  (Another alternative – vintage black leather brogues, already beat in and beat up.)  That’s it, I think I’ve said all that needs to be said…going crazy here anticipating fashion week!
