Summertime Kicks and California Dreamin' | Watch Me Dress

The day I had on this get-up, I’ll admit, I was a little bit disappointed.  Not because I didn’t like my clothes, but because I was having a miserable street photography day.  I was 0-3 when asking people if they’d let me photograph them for a fashion/style blog.  You would think people would be a bit more appreciative and even willing.  I guess next time I’ll camouflage myself as a well-known street shooter like Mr. Newton.  I’m assuming you’re not reading this post to hear about my disappointments so I’ll move on.

I’ve always found summertime a challenge because the extreme heat and humidity, from below ground in the subway and above ground amongst the tourist-filled streets, makes it almost impossible not to sweat out your sock-less loafers or t-shirt.  I’m inclined most days to wear as little as possible, but now that I’m trying to refine and build a more expansive library for my own personal style, I can’t be lazy.  And just because it gets hot doesn’t mean you should or can abandon texture.  That is why “Summertime Kicks and California Dreamin’” features canvas chukkas and a denim shirt.

I’ve always found color to be a very rewarding participant to an outfit.  We tend to go lighter and brighter in the summer.  It also doesn’t hurt to go softer either.  The denim western shirt, that  you’ve all seen before, is a perfect color compliment (i.e. somewhat neutral) for the rest of the outfit.  I chose to put the pops of color at opposite ends of my extremities; meaning my feet and my head.  I think the texture of the denim as well as the soft wearing of the material creates this beautiful blue hue that feels really at home in the look. My shorts are clearly neutral but to add some pop, the canvas chukkas give the outfit some eye-catching appeal.  The green headphones are just a cool, fun and functional add-on. It all just blends so nicely.  One thing you should look closely at…the eyelets of the shoes actually match the pocket square turned “rag” and go hand-in-hand with the shirt as well.  I don’t believe in all-out matching, but when you can find some real complimentary synergies..you have to go for it!
